Rotating Assembly
The replacement for the 7.3-liter IDI engine, Ford’s 7.3-liter Powerstroke V-8 has a cast-iron block and cylinder heads, hydraulic lifters, and two valves per cylinder. The turbocharged diesel engine produces 210 horsepower at 3,000 rpm and 425 pounds-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm. For 1997, the engine got a slight revamp with thicker valley walls in the block and a redesigned 7.3 engine cover and head gaskets.
Though a reliable engine, the 7.3 Powerstroke is prone to failing valve springs. The engine’s stock valve springs do not have high seat pressure. Because of this, the valves may fail to seal properly, causing valve float at high rpm’s and potentially leading to bent pushrods.
