Trucks haven’t been purely mechanical for a long time. A complex electrical system is in place to ensure that your truck maintains peak performance. This system includes a network of 7.3 Powerstroke sensors and wiring. One of those, the 7.3 Powerstroke ICP sensor is the part responsible for relaying how much fuel pressure your car’s system needs. Signs of a faulty 1999 7.3 ICP sensor include problems getting the vehicle started, misfires, poor fuel economy, and a truck that is down on power.

Among other 7.3 sensors that Ford use is the 7.3 Powerstroke MAP sensor, which provides the vehicle’s engine control unit with information about the pressure in the engine’s exhaust manifold. The 7.3 Powerstroke EBP sensor also focuses on the exhaust, gauging the vehicle’s exhaust back pressure. This information is used to ensure the turbocharger is providing the right amount of boost to the engine.

The EOP sensor in a 7.3 Powerstroke monitors the engine’s oil pressure and can trigger a warning light if that pressure is not within certain parameters. The EOP sensor isn’t the only device the oil system uses. A 7.3 Powerstroke VSS sensor, or vehicle speed sensor, is what your speedometer relies on. It measures the axel speed and uses that to calculate how fast the truck is moving.

Like anything, these sensors can all fail and there are varying symptoms your truck will display if an important sensor is having issues. Usually, the check engine light will come on — alerting you to a problem. Many sensor issues will cause your truck to be low on power and can lead to things like poor fuel consumption, so further investigation is probably needed before the exact issue is determined.
