In mid-1998, the Cummins 5.9L went from being a 12 valve engine to a 24 valve engine. At the same time, Cummins introduced the Bosch VP44 injection pump. The HX35 Holset turbo in the 5.9L engine was known to be slow to spool, so in 2000, Cummins replaced it with the new HY35 turbo. Although the new HY35 was quicker to spool, it had considerably less airflow than the HX35 at higher RPMs.

The Cummins 5.9L with the automatic transmission has 215 horsepower and 420 lb-ft. of torque while the manual transmission has 235 horsepower and 460 lb-ft. of torque. When 2002 rolled around, performance increased even further with an added 20 horsepower and 40 ft-lb. of torque.
