Though known as a fairly reliable engine, the 7.3 Powerstroke was not completely problem-free.

If you find that your Ford Super Duty is lacking boost, producing an excess amount of soot, or has increased exhaust gas temperatures, the 7.3 Powerstroke up pipes may be cracked and leaking around the collector flanges or by the firewall, requiring replacement. Also, the 7.3’s exhaust back pressure valves, which are located between the turbocharger and the exhaust downpipe, can become stuck in the open position. More noticeable during start-up in colder weather, a stuck valve can lead to a damaged turbo and manifold.

In addition, installing a 7.3 Powerstroke exhaust brake can help you maintain your speed while on a decline. Exhaust brakes stop exhaust flow to increase back pressure and slow down the engine.
