Ford’s 7.3-liter turbo-diesel V-8 engine features a hydraulic electric unit injector (HEUI) system, which combines a high-pressure oil pump and a low-pressure fuel lift pump instead of an injection pump and provides better fuel efficiency and performance compared to a mechanical system. Though, while this system is fairly reliable, the 7.3 Powerstroke injectors can wear out over time.

With a maximum flow rate of 140 cc, the 7.3 Powerstroke fuel injectors can become clogged due to particulates in diesel fuel. The injectors can also stick open, resulting in white exhaust smoke during startup. Other symptoms of failing fuel injectors include misfires, rough idling, hard starts, and increased fuel consumption.
