Turbocharger

This generation of Ford’s Powerstroke V-8 featured a single Garrett GTP38 fixed geometry turbocharger. The wastegated 7.3 turbo was paired with a newly introduced intercooler. For the 1999.5 model, the GTP38 turbo had both a larger compressor housing outlet and pedestal than its predecessors.

While this engine is known to be reliable, as the miles rack up on the odometer, there is more wear and tear on the 7.3 Powerstroke turbocharger and its parts. Some symptoms of a failing turbocharger include power loss, whining from the turbo, black or gray exhaust smoke, and excessive oil consumption.
