For the 2001 model year, GM joined forces with Isuzu as a manufacturing partner and introduced one of the best Duramax engines ever produced, the LB7. The LB7 was the diesel pickup engine that featured aluminum cylinder heads and common rail injection. Isuzu was also able to make power much cleaner and quieter than the diesel engines of the time, the Powerstroke 7.3L and the Cummins 5.9.

Off the production line, the LB7 Duramax had considerably more power than the competition. For example, weighing in at 300hp and 520 lb-ft of torque, the Powerstroke’s 235hp and 500 lb-ft and Cummins’ 235hp and 460 lb-ft stats stood in the shadows compared to the LB7.

On the road, the LB7 shined as well. Working quietly and with an improved level of efficiency, many proud owners reported a fuel economy upwards of 22 mpg on the highway.
