Though the 5.9-liter Cummins 24V engine is known for its reliability, its Achilles’ heel is its fuel system. The fuel system has issues with its lift pump and fuel injectors.

Mounted to the side of the engine block, the 5.9 Cummins lift pump had to withstand a lot of stress, with excessive heat and moving fuel a long distance through the system. Additionally, the 5.9 Cummins injectors also handle a lot of stress and can leak due to contaminants in the fuel. The injectors can clog and provide insufficient fuel into the cylinders.
