With 360 horsepower and 650 pounds-feet of torque, GM’s short-lived 6.6-liter LBZ Duramax had more power than its predecessor, the LLY. The reliable engine features a strengthened block, steel forged connecting rods, taller main bearing caps, and cast aluminum cylinder heads. As there are many LBZ performance parts on the market, this generation of the Duramax is highly sought after as it can handle high-horsepower builds.

However, even though it can be built to put more than 600 horsepower to the wheels, the engine’s Achilles’ heel is its cast aluminum pistons. The pistons are prone to cracking, usually on the centerline of the lower wrist pin. This can cause misfires and excessive exhaust smoke.
