2008-2010 F-SERIES 6.4L POWERSTROKE PARTS

The 6.4L Powerstroke began powering Ford Super Duty diesel trucks in 2008. Nicknamed The Slug, the 6.4L was quieter and cleaner than any previous Powerstroke engine. It was the first diesel engine that had twin turbochargers and remains the only one to do so. The 6.4L Powerstroke was also the first to use a diesel particulate filter or DPF which was an attempt to eliminate diesel soot. To reduce pollutants even further, they added a second EGR cooler and a more efficient EGR valve. Although the new DPF and the active regeneration system held back the 6.4L engine’s fuel economy, the engine was strong and reliable.

The 6.4L Powerstroke is based on International’s MaxxForce 7 engine platform. That design by International moved away from the outdated HEUI to a more common rail injection system which featured a Bosch CP4 injection pump. This change resulted in 25 more horsepower, 80 more lb-ft of torque, NOx emissions reduced by 50% and particulate matter emissions (soot) reduced by 90%.

The twin turbochargers provide benefits such as reduced turbo lag and overall improved performance. The 6.4 Powerstroke came with larger M16 head bolts and a “4 bolts per cylinder” design for greater clamping force.

While the 6.4L Powerstroke is the cleanest, most powerful diesel engine ever created by Ford for International, it would also be the last. Ford started offering their own design starting in 2011. Other than the poor fuel economy, the 6.4L Powerstroke is relatively reliable and provides good performance.
